Either memory serves me badly (it generally does) or Berbers are not picked as often as they are now; neither in Redbull tournaments or in tournaments in general. What gives?
berbers have always been a very strong civ in castle age. And you are somewhat correct, they are picked more often in EW than in RM, mainly due to :
in EW it is easier to get the phase where they have their strengths, they shine in castle age with cheap knights/camels, FU xbows/skirms and genitors in castle age
in EW, it is also easier to play Unique units than in RM, simply because in EW you start with more vils, and your eco doesn't hurt if you pull 3-4 vils on stone, whereas in RM you are guaranteed to fall behind in eco if you go for a UU play, or die to xbows if u try FC UU, enemy just makes some ranged units 3 TCs and u are stuck in 1 TC with UU (thats why only works with conqs or janis cause you can do a 1 tc push with forward castle)
in RM, there's two full ages: dark and feudal which can give some civs bonuses/spikes where berbers only have tiny bonuses (faster moving vils, meh, -10f on scouts, meh scouts in this meta nope). Hence other civs turbo ahead before berbers can get to their strong castle age phase or have significant lead by then. Thus we don't see berbers as often in RM
in EW, going fast imperial age is very hard to pull off, you are 1 mangonel shot away from losing your army and getting snowballed. Thus the longer stay in castle age, the better it is for berbers. They can match most civs with their cheap units, and have the deadly late game comp of Camel Archer hussar if the game does go that far
