Ok Loomers! It's time to dive into the surprisingly complicated topic of when to get loom. Besides just looking at how large of an effect it has against a va...
the trick is to look at the vil you are luring the boar with, then you dont lose it.
once there is aggro you just click the vil back to the TC, nothing more to do.
With shift queue you can make sure you idle neither TC nor villagers.
just takes a bit of pratice.
if you watch the boar a few dozen times there should be nothing surprising left. that is better than discribing it.
It is just practise. open single palyer and play 50 dark ages.
To extend your range a bit you can learn to block the boar by putting a Scout or Sheep in between and haave the boar walk around the obstacle.
really not hard to do.
On voobly it was a small economy lead and a gain in one or two seconds given the delay when queue vills or click to the next age, but now that is in the past, the economic advantage is minimal compared to the high risk of losing a villager, i'd say with the nerf on walls and how predictable is to catch your enemy without loom, making loom early is a better choice for sub 1800 players that can't react fast enough to save a villager by quick walling it.
If I'm honest I do not think there is any need for fancy micro with crazy new tctics when it comes to boar luring. If you get the boar in at a good time (so there's no sheep or old boar rotting) and don't lose a villager, that's all you need, really. I think the goal is that you don't have to focuss your attention 100% on the boar lure (with practice) and you can pay attention to your map, micro other villagers and scout your opponent.
If the boar is at a reasonable distance, going there with a vil and shooting it once form the furthest distance possible, and then immediately click your vil back under the TC (3). Before DE, you needed to shoot the boar twice for it to aggro on your vil, now only one shot is needed. And you want to minimise the time your vil stands there and shoots at the boar because in that time the boar can catch up to your vil and start attacking it (2).
If the boar is really far away, for example behind a woodline and you think you can't get it with an unloomed vil, you can use the blocking with sheep or the scout as decribed above. But to be honest, it might just be worth it to get loom, you even see some experts getting it early sometime (but not vil 3, only right before you lure the boar, at ca. vil 11).
As for shooting the boar with your TC, it's a bit dangerous. If you kill the boar with TC fire, you can't eat it (!). And this even happens to pros sometimes as well . So if you have 6 vils under the TC like you normally do, it should be fine to ill the boar with the vils. Exceptions are maybe if you're scared to get lamed and want to get a boar in super early or if you're playing nomad and only have few vils yet.
If they make a mistake and their vils take too many hits and are low HP when luring the boar, you'll sometimes see players wall in the vil to save it, or place a building foundation uner the boar to de-aggro it (4). But that's difficult and I'd rather pay attention to my vil so I don't need to try my mediocre quickwalling skills 11. And after all, if you lose a vil once ever 30 games or so, it's not the end of the world either, it happens to everyone.
All in all I think the first step should be to just learn how to lure a boar wit one unloomed vil, and as uberkerl said, practice makes perfect . Luring boar will not be the focus point of your crazy 3D chess strategy, it's mostly justa way to get food early and it will become automated with enough practice so you can use that time to plan your masterpiece.
Imagine not understanding boar mechanics. and how early loom harms economy, and talking about “I wanna see ultra impressive tactics instead”. Tbh with you these are the basics of the basics. There are tons of videos showing you how to do stuff, if not detailed explanation of what’s behind. Also if you want some ultra try hard stuff you can just watch the castings of big tourneys. Its 2020, age of youtube and twitch. Much things are already out there. It’s fine to be a bit nooby and ask questions, we all have that time. But pls don’t be so arrogant and attack streamers/content creators for no reason.
The later you delay it. The better. If you're planning to early full wall, early loom isn't a bad idea. Ideally around pop 15 or 16. Better to save a villager than lose it.
Lol just grab a vill and attack the boar, when the boar runs towards the vill, send the luring villager to a point behind your tc. As soon as the boar approaches the tc, use the other villagers to kill the boar. This is all there is to it, you have now successfully lured a boar. Like others have said, I am sure there is tons of YT content on this that covers all you need to know. Don't go all AlphaZero PhD Nobel Prize on this topic.
Regarding loom: try to do it as the last upgrade before clicking to feudal, since this is the most efficient in terms of eco. Of course you can do it a bit earlier sometimes if this situation requires it (e.g. you go for early walls, scout is laming your villagers etc.).
