Every time someone says "Spring patch", I think about a patch nerfing walls and making arabia great again.
But that would mean Spring would be spending even more stone on fully walling himself in the early feudal age.Every time someone says "Spring patch", I think about a patch nerfing walls and making arabia great again.
Yep. This has been my take since the beginning. It is bad *for the entire franchise* if AoE4 flops, and it definitely seems to be floppingBut with aoe4's demise potentially affecting aoe2 negatively... it makes it even more of a foolish attitude.
The way I see it If aoe4 had exploded in popularity it would have been great for aoe2. It would have helped it grow. Imagine a healthy 300k users playing aoe4 daily. That'd be great for every game in the franchise, aoe1, aoe3, mythology, and specially aoe2. So the current situation where aoe4 is crashing hard is just bad all around.
Regardless of aoe4 though, aoe2 can't die because basically there are tens of thousands of die hard fans. Even if Microsoft stopped pumping money into aoe2 tournaments the community would be taking over and it'd be done like it was in the past. Back when the big tournaments were 2k-10k instead of 20k-100k.
My anecdotal observations of other dead/dying/whatever franchises from AAA companies see said companies stubbornly staying the course on bad game design in spite of customer complaints demanding otherwise. Therefore I guess MS will try to salvage AoE 4, will not redirect efforts to AoE II in spite of AoE II's long term health showing it's a safe investment, and praying for the luck of the opposite happening is a good idea. Will MS eventually focus more on AOE2 again? Try to salvage and keep AOE4 going? Give up on the genre altogether?
That's only valid if they keep eliminated early from tournaments like today. I am suprised that you are not aware that money was the most important factor since beginning, not because they like AOE4.nobody is interested in the tournaments, despite prize pool.
does memb even know how to play the game or any game knowledge about aoe4 and its civs? he is not interested in aoe4 and has no time to learn a new rts and that is totally fine. That same "boring" final was amazing to watch at hera stream because hera and daut know whats going on and can take the viewers through the set. A video game is like music taste, its different for different folks.Pro players that changed age 2 for age 4 going back to age 2 in 3-6 months when the hype ended and nobody is interested in the tournaments, despite prize pool.
i know is subjective, but i watched like 5-10 minutes in membs chanel yesterday and on saturday. the game, to see, is boring as hell. maybe playing is funny. even memb cant talk about something, because nothing was happening. and it was the final!!!!! and again, competitive scene is just not there. boring.
Yeah it was a pretty bad sign when they refused to do anything about the zoom level after the feedback in the stress test.My anecdotal observations of other dead/dying/whatever franchises from AAA companies see said companies stubbornly staying the course on bad game design in spite of customer complaints demanding otherwise. Zoom is actually internal rendering, the game doesn't have good performance on large resolutions, so that might be the reason of the limited zoom, lets imagine you are playing at 1440p or 4k and then zoom out x1.5 or x2, that would kill the frame rate, unlike a game like anno series, there is a lot of computing going on, so that confirms they are using a really old source code or engine, for the ugly graphics one could expect the game running at +200 fps on a gtx1060 like dota2, unfortunate you need a 3090 for something close to 200 fps on 1080p, with more zoom you would kill most computers frame rate.Yeah it was a pretty bad sign when they refused to do anything about the zoom level after the feedback in the stress test.

competitve scene is just not there? when literally it is the melting pot of rts players from various franchises competiting for the win, steel series didnt even have a favorite to win the tourney before it began and ended with a dream run of former sc2 player demuslim.
Yeah they are using an engine from 2006 so it is showing its age in certain ways but I think the artistic design choices are more to blame for the appearance of the graphics being ugly than technical limitations. A 2006 engine is modern enough that at least an upgraded version can be used to make acceptable looking graphics for audiences of today, especially with RTS where the standards for graphics are generally lower in terms of overall artistic intricacy. You are right that the code does not seem well optimized for performance, which to me is really surprising considering how much experience Relic should have working with the engine. They must have tried to do some things they never had before (to the result of people saying it looks like it's from 2009) or there are some serious problems behind the scenes at Relic. I am not sure I buy the explanation that zooming out makes framerate worse as it doesn't seem like this is typically the case in games I play but I will defer to someone who understands computer graphics rendering better than I do.Zoom is actually internal rendering, the game doesn't have good performance on large resolutions, so that might be the reason of the limited zoom, lets imagine you are playing at 1440p or 4k and then zoom out x1.5 or x2, that would kill the frame rate, unlike a game like anno series, there is a lot of computing going on, so that confirms they are using a really old source code or engine, for the ugly graphics one could expect the game running at +200 fps on a gtx1060 like dota2, unfortunate you need a 3090 for something close to 200 fps on 1080p, with more zoom you would kill most computers frame rate.
MS also pumping money to aoe2. even before aoe4. isn't this also artificially boost their own game?In other words MS pumping money to artificially boost their own game and some streamers trying to gain audience quickly.
aoe4 has so much going for it,
* MS pumping money into the game
* streamers jumping on the train (mainly aoe2 and some from other games too)
* Big tournaments lined up for next 6 months (none for aoe2)
* a reddit community which is willing to go to any lengths to defend their spend of 60$ (now they are looking to flood r/aoe4 with memes to counter the complaints :D)
and yet player numbers keep declining
It's like, sometimes you pump to grow, sometimes you pump to prop.MS also pumping money to aoe2. even before aoe4. isn't this also artificially boost their own game?

Just finished a $75k AoE2 tourney, another $25k S-tier announced for January, T-90 also already said he will announce another S-tier in January, Memb announced Battle of Africa for first half of 2022, and AoE4 has had, what, 3 20k tourneys total?and the difference is, sometimes you pump the money into a good product to grow/sustain
sometimes you pump money into a bad product just to survive and not let it DoA
For me the main complaint is that aoe2 is on the chopping block for aoe4. If aoe2 pro scene and tournaments stayed similar while MS was pumping money into aoe4 as well, who cares.
Unlike SC2 for which most of the top pros are staying with the game and tournaments are lined up for SC2 as well, aoe2 suffers in both categories
and before you attack me- aoe4 is too expensive and sucks but some pros playing it is not a reason to spam 25 pages of hate in this topic
for aoe2 is cheaper but more people already own it meaning it's harder to grow. aoe4 is pricier and less people own it making it easier to grow. Aoe2 has like 100k in just 2 months which is probably more than ever beforeand the difference is, sometimes you pump the money into a good product to grow/sustain
sometimes you pump money into a bad product just to survive and not let it DoA

This gem from r/aoe4
It has been 3 days since aoe2 has had a maximum daily peak of players bigger than aoe4, so the impact of big streamers from different communities and 20k events every week is not doing anything to revert or stop those numbers.
