Since aoc is 14 years allready, the strategic elment of the game has almost stagnated. From my pov as a viewer, one of the things that keeps this game fresh to spectate is all the new creative custom maps that forces players to think in new ways.
But one thing that i find weird, is that the feature to add civs isn't used in the same way. I think the potential of civ-adding in high level tournements is huge although AoFE failed at this matter. The problem with AoFE was that it wanted to do everything, also the 5 civs that it introduced wasn't that great either.
I don't think these custom civs should be considered as equal to the original civs in any way but rather use them as a tool to make interesting matchups in tournaments. Lets say that in addition to make a map pack for a tourney, we also make "civpack" made for that tourney only. Just release the new civs a month or two before the tournament and let the players test them and learn their weaknesses and strengths before it all starts. If the civs are good, they could be used again later or they could just be scrapped and never used again if they are bad.
The beauty of this is that you can do almost anything you want. The only requirement is that both players/teams get the same equal starting point. This means that you can make both superoverpowered civs aswell as balanced civs.
There are many people on this forum who wants a balance patch for the sake of making weaker units more used, but instead why not just make a new civ that also give these units a place to shine. The best part about this is that aoc would still be aoc.
There are probably alot of technical challanges to make this work, but if it is possible I would love to see something like this happen. And remember that a new civ don't need a new graphic set, a new campaign, a new voicepack etc. to be fully usable in a tourney.
I could probably go on, but I don't want to make a wall of text here, you probably got my point allready.
What do you guys think of this? And pls, go troll somewhere else.
