Hi, to demonstrate and explain a bit how captains mode works, here is a picture tutorial. If you are not familiar with the system, I hope this will help you to understand. For this demonstration the host captain's monitor, and the guest captain's monitor on the right.
The point of Captains mode is to choose the civilizations you will be playing with in AoE2. Apart from only choosing your civilizations you are also given the chance to ban certain civilizations for the opponent team. Your opponent's team then won't be able to pick (choose) that civilization. (Your opponent will be given the same chance). After you finished the drafting process, you can go to AoE2, start up the game and select the civilizations your captain picked for your team.
First, the host player should host a game. http://aoe2cm.net/cmmonthly
Send the generated key (or url) by pm to the other captain.
Copy the code sent by pm to join game (alternatively just go to the url)
Now when both users connected, you should see the main interface. At the top you have the type of the draft.
Below you have the timeline or order of the picks and bans. It goes from left to right.
Below the timeline there are the two sides. On the left is the host captain and on the right the guest captain. The colored places represent the fields you will fill in with your picks and bans. I'm the host, so I'm on the left. The civilizations I pick or I ban are shown on my side. The same for the other captain. So for example when I ban a civ for the opponent, it will show up among my bans.
Below the already chosen and banned civilization there is a message board, which tells you what to do. There also will be a timeout until you have to pick or ban something.
Under this, you will see the civilization picker. When it's you turn to pick, just click on you choice.
When all is well, guest captain should click ready.
Host captain then can start the draft
There will be a timeout of 5 seconds. Your side of the drafting will be highlighted in case you forgot your name.
It's the host's turn. Keep track of the messages. When it's your turn, you can pick or ban a civilization - civs under mouse cursor will be highlighted.
Now it's the guest's turn. In hidden mode, like in the example, the turns with black corners (in this case all of them) will be hidden from the opponent.
They will stay hidden until there is a "show" turn in the timeline (black turn). Let me show, how that works.
It's the host's turn again. Notice how the opponent's turn is hidden again.
This is the last turn before the bans are shown. Go to next turn to see what happens.
Now, there was a show turn, so both captains see the previous bans.
Another thing I want you to notice is the disabled choices (squeares). If you can't pick a civilization, it will be semi-transparent. My opponent already banned persians and mayans, so I can't pick either.
Next turn, it's the guest's pick. Notice, that he can't see the host's pick, but only because the turn was hidden (black corner in the timeline). So watch out for those black corners. From G2- onwards, there won't be any hidden turns, so the opponent will see your choices immediately.
When the draft ends, make sure you copy the code, and paste it into the in-game chat before starting the game in AoE, so it shows up in the recordings.
One more thing I didn't touch upon. When you don't pick a civilization in time, or click the random box, the system will generate a random civ for you. It will be given a badge like this:
Let me know, If i should explain something better! Also let me know, if this format is better, or would you prefer a video, like last time?
Make sure to sign up for the tourney! I'm looking forward to it!
