I wanted to make a topic about GSL Groups compared to Round Robin after the Group Stage ended, but I realized that the first two rounds of Group A were actually played similar to a GSL Group, so why not make it now and compare the differences.
Let me quickly explain what the GSL system is: It's a group where in the first round the top seeded team plays the lowest seeded team and the two middle seeded teams play each other as well. In the second round the winners of the first round play each other and the winner is first place in the group. The losers of the first round also play each other where the loser of that match is last place in the group. Finally the two remaining teams batlle in the third round for second place.
So let's compare it to Group A of BoA2: The top seeded team Secret played against YinYang and the two middle seeded teams Suomi and Heresy also played each other. Then the winners (YinYang and Suomi) and the losers (Secret and Heresy) played each other. Since YinYang won the winners match they would qualify as first place and since Heresy lost the losers match they would be out of the group. Finally Secret and Suomi would play each other for second place. If either the winners match or the losers match would've been won by the other team, this would've resulted in a rematch of the first round, but that's not the case in this scenario.
Now compare this to Round Robin. Every team is still able to qualify, there are still three different teams that can take first place and every team still can get last place in theory. This makes the stage more confusing for players and viewers. However, it also gives the losing team one last chance to prove themselves and with three teams able to make it to the play-offs, still a chance to make it. Unfortunately there's also a chance that the scores in the group end up being a tie, which can be quite anticlimactic, and where the possible teams that make it out of the group can even be decided by the original seed. There's also the issue of the first place not being the team that won all 3 of their games, but that's more of an issue with this scoring system, not necessarily with the Round Robin in general.
What do you think is the more fair system? Should every team get a chance till the last round to qualify or would you prefer the GSL system, where the top and bottom team are decided after the second round?
