So after looking through all of the opens this year I did not see any pre qualification rounds to get into the 128 player qualification round.Sorry, i thought the official pages of the tournaments such as https://www.rolandgarros.com/en-us/article/qualifying-rounds-start-monday-roland-garros-2019 are correct. However, pre quals are not uncommon and have been known to happen before. The roger cup in canada for example had Pre quals to select Canadian representatives. ...
I see so the best way to combat my points is to say go do it yourself. We don't do it like that, so go do it yourself.
Great discussion, you have changed my mind on everything.
Also it is called admin win. Not new. Not revolutionary. 15 minutes no show? Good. Game over move on.
To be clear, I have no strong opinion on the subject here, I don't know what's the right choice, and I don't think if I have enough knowledge & experience to even attempt to guessTournament organizers want to see the best players play, and to have competitive matches. They are not interested in "inclusiveness" or "fairness" if that means the quality of viewing will decrease.
As apparently most others here I just fail to see your point. Initially you complained about people not having a chance to qualify. As TriRem and others have pointed out, this is simply wrong. Considering the rather low competitiveness of AoE2, it is probably a million times easier to train, grind the ladder and qualify via the qualifying tournament than to make your way into the tennis US Open. Usually, in fully competitive sports, players basically sacrifice ten years of their life and a whole lot of money with (almost) no return until they may or may not (most of them won't make it) get a chance to compete on highest level. And in many sports they don't even earn a lot of money when they made it, take well established but not incredibly popular sports such as rowing, fencing, ... as an example. There is nothing more disheartening that being excluded, and for people that are investing time effort and hundreds of hours into their lives to make the push in to the top player strata, things like this qualification bracket process is cancer.
My post wasn't about you doing it yourself but about how it would be too much of useless admin work to have open qualifiers. Besides, as others have said, more than 32 people trying to get into qualifiers would just be wasted time anyway since they have 0 chance to ever get a piece of the pie.
Low rated players may like it to play a game or 2 against the best of the best, but for the top ladder players it's just a huge waste of their time.

Thus, if the necessity to put in effort while still taking the risk of failure already demotivates you, top level competition is simply the wrong place for you.

-Introduce the qualifier maps and top civs and strategies for them.
Maybe after the qualifiers are done, a video recap of how the people who qualified played, highlights from their games, notable features about their style, civs, map picks etc just so people who (understandably) can't watch 24 matches or however many it is get an idea of what happened before that point and can feel more involved with following events when they watch the main event. Just a 20min talk through is what I'm imagining. How would you like the qualifier to be presented? Is there anything in addition to the casts you'd like to see?
What the most anticipated matchups are, so we know who to catch.Topics for HC3's Pre-Qualifier talk show I will record this weekend
Viper is always amusing, Hera really did a great job casting at NAC so that would be cool.Which pro player would you like to see cocast some qualifying sets?
As someone else mentioned, the player overview videos last time were amazing.Any Ideas or input for main event

Players who've improved a lot (or got worse 11) since a year ago and HC2.
The maps, particularly new ones.
Juicy predictions so we can all troll you when one is wrong

Not sure how possible this is since obviously you yourself will have no time while it's going on, but after the first day before each match it'd be really cool to have a short highlights video or even just talk about what each player did in previous rounds so we know what to look for and to remind us what happened. For me the building of a story around each hidden player is a huge part of the fun and this would add to it.
I think we had these last HC but reruns each night are always nice for people in different times.
Score overlay and maybe bracket overlay having the characters face/icon/sprite/whatever on as well as the name (instead of the flag normally) might make it more memorable.
