If you want to revive an old format it would be interesting to see mono civ cup revival with 32 players, so the best players have bad civs and not just mediocre civs.
Or a MegaRandom tourney. Always fun. (Maybe not always fair, but always fun yes.)
a (1v1) tournament featuring maps that ...
- are not in the Standard Maps / are not being played all the time
- but could potentially be included into standard maps or ranked map pool
- are balanced/fair without tendencies to create big advantages for one player
- make sure that fully walling one's base is not too easy (provided they're land maps); imagine maps similar to Arabia, Gold Rush, etc. that have Terrain like on Acropolis or Land Madness on the edges of the map
One map I would like to see here is Lowland from one of your Showmatches (Link); iirc it's based on a Megarandom map that was played before.
Option: To make things even more interesting, if you find/get enough maps like that, you could reveal them each time a new round begins - like this, players wouldn't have too much time testing these maps and would need to adapt as good as they can in a limited timeframe.
Whatever you pick, I'm sure it's gonna be a great tournament on a very high level
I liked the Master of MegaRandom tournament a lot. Especially with the castle age start. Maybe even just a tournament with castle age start as main theme. Swissboyy wanted to introduce it into MoA4 but unfortunately too many people were against it and the idea died afterwards.
Aspiring Experts 2 would be good too in my opinion. Some different names competing for the top, and AE1 had some really interesting and super close matches towards the end. The winner (PROject_Belgium) has actually improved since then so it's not like Aspiring Experts is just a name!
Maybe not the best to break viewers records but it's a fun tournament idea regardless.
Or how about something a bit more random than even megarandom:
Make a long list of different possible games, most of them quite normal, some of them maybe even a bit "troll-y", like:
-1v1 mirror arabia
-1v1 DM
-1v1 megarandom
-1v1 with map pool
-1v1 arena pick civ
-1v1 micro scenario
-1v1 with pick civ for your opponent
-1v1 with fair civ cup rules
-etc etc
And then at the beginning of each Bo5 series, you randomize which of those games will be played in game 1, game 2, game 3, game 4 and game 5 (if it goes that far).
I'd like to see MegaRandom but it doesn't need to be MegaRandom. At least some selection of hybrid maps which reward scouting, outside the box thinking, adapting and breaking the meta. Those are imo the most enjoyable to watch.
Frankly, I would love to see a highly competitive team game tournament. I love the strategy aspect of the game more (like DauT), and since team game tournaments are rare, we still get to see so many new strategies. The bar has been set quite high with 1v1 tournaments and the meta is starting to be set for the new balances. The last big team game tournament was ECL but the league stage was even further away (and it was single elimination). Personally I'd like to see a qualifiers group stage (similar to HC3) and then a PROPER swiss format for the qualified 8 in the main event. So, we get more games. :D Maybe the community can/will contribute more towards the prizepool during the qualifiers.
And with those things in mind, the one tournament I can think of is Battle of Africa. It was really fun and hype. So, how about Battle of Africa 2?
I would suggest a shorter Battle of Africa type team tournament. Maybe BOA DE or BOA 1.5 as a teaser/tester to a bigger BOA 2 tournament when DE is in a smoother shape.
I vote in a 2v2 tournament. In recent years, you've organized 1v1 and 3v3 events - and we've had a lot of 1v1 events recently.
I know we had Doubles Age, Two Pools and Copa America in 2019, but it would be a good 2v2 tournament at the moment. Doing the correct calculations, I believe with this money It could make a good prize for top8 or top16, as @Toom03 suggested. And maybe you can even raise more for you and for the prize.
Would like to see a 3v3 tournament, imo the most interesting mode apart from 1v1 which we've been spoiled with lately. There's a few interesting maps which rarely get used, some of which only got a few games during ECL. Doesn't have to be as big as BOA to be a quality tournament.
Those who are proposing a team game, do you realize that the prize pool would be too small divided btw 3 or 4 players making it less appealing to some guys to take it serious.
Also team game = sling fest.
A master of arabia with different settings like no walls and limiting trushers to only use towers in one game could be interesting.
