This is an idea for a tournament.
4 fans get to manage their own team in a short league. 1850+ players would get to enter the draft and be selected by the winners.
It's like any fantasy sport where there's a draft - every player can only be picked once.
I think this tournament will be fun for everyone. It's a chance for new players to show themselves, to see dream teams, a chance for lesser known fans or players to meet some of their favorite players. It will also give publicity to clans by # of players in the draft, plus it should produce some fun recorded games. If the draft is done as I suggested it could be a very fun event that people look forward to, and if it's a success, might generate the same kind of excitement that WCL used to.
Here's how I suggest doing it:

Choosing fans & Player Draft
The 45 highest rated players who sign up will be on the draft list. Of these, 32 will be picked.
On the day of the draft the 4 winners will be randomly selected out of the finalists.
Once the 4 winners are randomly selected then the draft order for the first round should be randomized. The order is explained in more detail below.
After draft order is randomly determined, the 4 participants should have no more than 10-15 minutes to review the player list and make their draft strategy.
Prior to the draft, a draft list must be made. Players should be seeded 1-45 based on rating plus aoczone staff can make tweaks here and there to account for how well a player has been playing lately (tournaments, etc.) or any other skill factors that might not be accounted for in rating. The draft list must contain the player's name, rating, country, time zone and clan. The default sort method should be by seed, but it should also be sortable by all the other categories as well.
The draft list must be made available on the aoczone website at the time of the draft. It must not be made available beforehand to anyone in the public to ensure fairness of the draft. The draft must be done live, and it would be a fun feature to have it available to watch live on the website or to announce the results in some custom room on Voobly.
The draft should be conducted by one person. That person must announce the start of each round and confirm each player's picks and announce the start and end of turns. This person ideally is the same person who is updating the website, although there may be a separate observer present during the draft who operates the website portion of the draft.
The # of draft rounds must be even to ensure fairness. If you add up each column it equals 2.5.
rounds -> picking order:
MAIN TEAM
1. 1, 2, 3, 4
2. 4, 3, 2, 1
3. 1, 2, 3, 4
4. 4, 3, 2, 1
5. 1, 2, 3, 4
6. 4, 3, 2, 1
RESERVES
7. 1, 2, 3, 4
8. 4, 3, 2, 1
After the draft the team manager must give his team a name!
Tournament Format
Each team plays every other team 4 times, 2 games will be home, 2 will be away.
Points for win: 6
Points for loss: 0
Bonus points for using 5 players in one week: 2
Bonus points for using 6 players in one week: 3
The maximum # of points a team can earn in one week is 15, 12 from wins, 3 from bonus points
At the end of the season points will be tallied. If there is a tie then a tie breaker game will be played on a neutral map (chosen by admins) format 3v3.
Home map dynamics
In order to prevent the away team from gaining bonus points or to maximize the strengths of his team, a home team manager may opt to play 1 of the 2 games as a 1v1 or 2v2. The other game, no matter what, must be 3v3.
Map rules:
A standard list of popular custom maps will be provided to teams (URv4/5 for example) and can be chosen by all teams.
In addition, teams can also choose up to 3 custom maps which do not appear on the standard list. Any custom map can be chosen as long as it does not appear on the standard list chosen by the league. Any such chosen map must be submitted to league officials before the start of the season and subsequently approved. These maps (up to 3) will be known as Team Choice. In season play, home teams must choose for their home map any map which is on the league list plus or from their Team Choice list.
